Incisiv conducted a survey of 2,500 in-store shoppers (specifically in the high-touch retail segment including fashion, luxury and specialty) to understand the behaviors and preferences that will define the future of retail stores. Incisiv also conducted a survey of 125 US high-touch retailers to understand how their capabilities and plans line up against shopper expectations.

  • The role of the store dramatically shifted to primarily being a fulfillment center in the immediate aftermath of COVID-19. Will it continue to be so in the future? If so, what will best-in-class customer and store associate experiences look like?
  • As the “research and discovery” aspect of a customer’s shopping journey goes almost entirely digital, inventory visibility will become the new “open for business”. How else will the customer journey evolve, and what experiences will help retailers differentiate?
  • Store associates continue to be seen as an important source of knowledge and insight, but shoppers are currently averse to in-store lingering and conversation. How can store associates build stronger relationships digitally, and how can retailers infuse delight in largely transactional experiences such as BOPIS or curbside pick-up?
